It’s obvious that I, like so many other Americans, feel like our system of government is broken. The reason it’s so dysfunctional is that Congress and the president are not representing the people, but rather the political party to which they are a member. This is all done at the expense of not serving the people through the Constitution that they swore to serve and protect.
As American citizens, who pay their taxes and obey the laws of the land, we need to ask ourselves, “What happens when the will of the people is continuously and inordinately violated for an extended period and not honored by the politicians whom they put in office in the first place?”
The answer: Our democracy and republic will become extinct.
In the first chapter of my book I explain in detail the scenario we can expect if that should occur. Pure and simple, if we lose those two cherished systems of governing (our democracy and republic) because of abandonment and disregard, the results of such neglect would not be pretty.
There are always lessons to learn when natural or political disasters occur. For example, in the case of a political disaster that I described earlier, where we ultimately lose our democracy and our republic, it’s because the political parties continued to not learn how to compromise so that they could pass legislation where all Americans could benefit from the laws enacted. As a result, we would end up losing what our Founding Fathers fought valiantly to preserve – the freedoms outlined in our Declaration of Independence, Constitution and the Bill of Rights. We must remember that our forefathers felt so strongly about the wisdom of what they were doing that they were willing to risk losing their lives to defend the freedoms they fought to establish – the freedoms enunciated in the Declaration of Independence.
Assuming that scenario occurs, and we do indeed lose our democracy and our republic, we can conclude it occurred due to the disregard of the political process by our elected officials as well as the self-serving pursuits of our politicians. This is all being done at the horrendous expense of not responding to the needs of “We the People.” Our elected officials are willing to sacrifice everything to satisfy their desire for power, fame and money. In doing so, everything about our country which we hold near and dear to our heart – such stuff as our dreams and all the things that we believed made America great, are surrendered. The saddest part of this story is that all of this is done at the unspeakable loss of all that our Founding Fathers did, as well as those who fought in all the wars since the birth of our nation to protect our freedoms.
Because of my lack of knowledge of American history and how our political system operates, before I wrote my first book The Impotent Giant and my second book, What Would Our Founding Fathers Say?, I didn’t realize what we would lose if we would lose our democracy and our republic. I now know that loss would make the “Fiscal Clift” look like child’s play. It would be quite insignificant compared to the loss of what our country has stood for since our nation declared its independence from England.
