Though our government was formed using democratic principles, today, it’s run by the rich and powerful, not by the “common man,” as intended by our Founding Fathers. That’s because over the years the political parties have high jacked our political system and allowed the wealthy and powerful to seek high office and win; this all being done by requiring more and more monies to run for national political office, whether it be for a seat in Congress or becoming president of the United States.

On July 9, 2014, Peter Van Buren, writing for the Dissenter.com Website wrote a blog entitled: Chelsea Clinton Makes $900,000 for Doing Almost Nothing. He introduces his blog by saying: “A feature of oligarchy is the dynastic ascension of new leaders, children who rise to positions of power and wealth simply by the luck of birth. We welcome Chelsea Clinton to the club.”

He goes on to state, “Unlike most well-to-do young people who, after a decent education, take a series of unpaid internships and entry-level positions to begin working their way up some corporate ladder, Chelsea jumped more than a few rungs. Despite never having attended journalism school or otherwise having worked in the field, Chelsea was hired by NBC news to do feel-good stories as part of their ‘Making a Difference’ series. Though the starting salary for such positions is already a chunky $100,000 -200,000, Chelsea is being paid $600,000 a year for the same work. Or less work.”

Van Buren states that Chelsea has worked for NBC for almost three years. During that time she has worked on “all of 14 stories.” That means she has earned about “$26,724 for each minute she appeared on air or $445 per second. As in one-two-three = $1335,” correctly adding sarcastically, “there’s your month’s rent.”

Van Buren reports that NBC “has an eye for talent, at least the talented children of important politicians in 2009 …” For it was then that it hired George W. Bush’s daughter Jenna to serve as a correspondent on the Today’s show.

Van Buren also noted that in 2011, NBC hired Sen. John McCain’s daughter Meghan to be a contributor to MSNBC.

Obviously, Chelsea has made obscene amounts of money clearly not proportionate to her effort; I could have chosen to cite further evidence by quoting Van Buren how this is so, but I have chosen not to have elaborated further on such matters.  ‘Equality of pay’ would never have happened between Chelsea and the ordinary well-qualified entry-level journalist, even assuming he or she was clearly more credentialed than Chelsea and who would do the same things that she has done; for to expect he or she to be paid the same amount of money for the services rendered that Chelsea received would be pure folly. It just wouldn’t happen.

What Van Buren has done, is once again shown how people in political power and prestige rules the distribution of wealth and the political process and, by doing that erodes the foundation of our democracy where “We, the People,” not just the rich and powerful determine the political future of our beloved country.

Under the current system of government, the rich continues to get richer, the poor, poorer, and the middle class is getting squeezed.  This paradigm cannot continue indefinitely. Ultimately, something will have to give.

How can our system of government sustain itself over time if the major political players don’t honor the Democratic process under which our Founding Fathers established our Constitution?

The only way our democracy can be sustained is if all Americans have an opportunity to participate in the political process where their voices are heard and where they have an equal chance to serve their country in the same way that the wealthy and well-connected politician is able to do. If that doesn’t happen, ultimately, by the end of this century or before, our democracy and Republic will crumble, and God only knows what will happen if that occurs.
