Who suffers when our national integrity is abused by our elected politicians? Each citizen, aside from the politician who has violated his or her promise to protect and support the “We, the People” Country’s bible, our Constitution.
There’s a plethora of examples that could be found at any time, where at least one or more of our esteemed (?) politicians have committed some type of malfeasance that has violated the intent and aim of writing the Constitution in the first place. That purpose was declared in the Constitution’s preamble, which states: “We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”
The key words here are, “We the People.” It’s not, “We the corporations, we the lobbyists, we the political party, or any other designation that ascribes any other group, other than, “We the People,” for which our Constitution was written. If any other group replaces the “We the People” designation, it’s clearly a violation of the purpose and intent of the Constitution, which is to serve the people, And that means ALL the people. The founders wanted to remove any doubt that the Constitution was not handed down by a god or king, but rather, was created by the people of the United States.
The framers were aware that the preamble reflected not only what they believed were their hopes and dreams for their fledging country, but also that they were acting as delegates for The People, and they wanted to faithfully represent their fellow Americans’ wishes. They were so aware of their responsibilities to faithfully represent their countrymen, they made a point of describing their fellow colonists as the “common man,”, or in today’s lexicon, “the working class” or “civilians.” It would be the larger portion of our society which may be educationally less sophisticated and who were mostly concerned with the day-to-day problems of life such as with their health, family and employment.
We must remember that the Framers of the Constitution were an elite group. Almost all of them were well-educated men of means who were leaders in their communities. If they were only interested in their idiosyncratic and selfish interests, which may be quite contrary to the “common” man’s interests, they could abort the attempt to successfully create a document that would reflect the interests of ALL Americans.
In future blogs, as I’ve done in the past, I will continue to show how our political integrity at both the individual and national level continues to be bruised and battered because of ignorance, or willful intent. As a result, our politicians continue to not make legislative choices based on sound national principles as stated in our Constitution, Bill of Rights and Declaration of Independence. If that were the case, the rights and principles of ALL Americans would be consistently considered in all legislative decisions, instead of time after time ignoring such needs, in favor of more immediate personal gain at the politician’s individual or party level which frequently include satisfying the rich and powerful wishes at the expense of the wants and desires of the “common man,” which our Constitution was also written to serve and protect.
I will not only continue to describe the problem, but in future blogs, I will provide a noteworthy bipartisan solution to fix the problem so that we can once again say, “I’m proud to be an American.”
