On September 30, 2013, reporter Roger Simon wrote an outstanding political column on the website POLITICO entitled: The frauds on the Hill target Obama. He begins his column by raising the question, “Who are these people? Of what are they made that they can say and do such things on the floor of Congress? No nonsense is too great, no act too low.”
Just those introductory remarks alone set the stage for what follows, which are most shameful remarks and actions that should be beneath the dignity and honored position that any Senator or Congressional member has been elected to serve.
Simon stated that House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.), while leaving the capital in the early hours of Sunday morning, after taking action in an effort to shut down the government, stated, “It’s time for President Obama to rise above stubborn partisanship.” In response to that statement, Simon said, “Which is like an arsonist telling others not to play with matches.”
In my recently published book entitled, What Would Our Founding Fathers Say?: How Today’s Leaders Have Lost Their Way, I discuss partisanship maneuvers to destroy President Obama’s chances of being reelected.
In a 2010 interview with National Journal, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell was very clear in naming “The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one term president.”
As mentioned earlier, when Majority Leader Eric Cantor criticized President Obama as engaging in “stubborn partisanship,” that comment paled in comparison to the comment made by Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell when he said, in 2010, that he wanted to make President Obama a “one term president.” That not only represented extremism at its worst, but because the partisanship is not specific regarding why President Obama should be removed from office, it smacks of prejudice. The type of prejudice is unknown. It could be because he’s a member of the opposition party, or, even more egregious, it could be because he’s an African American.
When it comes to any office holder, it’s the responsibility of the opposition to be very specific why the removal of office of that politician should occur. The fact he or she is a member of the political opposition is not a sufficient reason for the removal. For, if that’s the case, the perpetrator is simply wishing to rid all of the opposition from being an office holder, and that attitude is not consonant with the democratic principle where all views, regardless of party affiliation, need to be aired and considered viable and potentially acceptable.
Where’s the bipartisanship of cooperation in order to get bills passed through a cooperative spirit on both sides of the aisle? When that happens, our democracy thrives and every American’s dreams potentially can be actualized, because they’re following the Declaration of Independence and Constitution dictates, and in that way, serve the public in the way intended.
Simon reports that Rep. Marlin Stutzman (R-Ind.) said: “Obamacare is based on limitless government, bureaucratic arrogance and a disregard for the will of the people.”
Simon further stated that not only did the Supreme Court uphold “Obamacare,” but he also campaigned on it during the time he was running for president the 2nd time and got reelected. The question that he raises is, “in what manner was the will of the people disregarded?”
Furthermore, it is customary that once a bill has become law, there is no longer debate and rankling about the measure, but rather, the Congress moves on to the next bill that might be under consideration.
Obviously, today’s Republican Congress is very recalcitrant and unwilling to move on because the objective of the party, if they want to be honest with themselves, is to defeat President Obama at every turn in hopes that will enhance the chances the Republicans will win more seats in the upcoming election in 2014 and 2016.
Simon raises a very relevant question: “And since when did the extremists in Congress care about the will of the people? Is it the will of the people that government be closed, salaries stopped, services suspended? ”
Simon reports that because the extremists have lost their vote on Obamacare, they threaten to cut off government funding unless Obamacare is suspended and if that doesn’t happen, they will threaten to have our government default on its debt.
Talk about sore losers, to say nothing about the unsuitability for people like that to serve in the Halls of Congress. We must remember, they pledged to serve ALL the people when they pledged their allegiance to the Constitution they swore to defend and protect. They fall far short of the mark when they continue to behave in such a partisan fashion.
Because what Simon has said is so interesting, I could have gone on and on, commenting with you on what he has written, but, because of time and space constraints, I’m going to stop here.
